The trip from Naples to Athens was a long one including a train from Naples to the port town of Bari, an overnight ferry from Bari to Patras, followed by a train from Patras to Athens. Oh and a quick tip about overnight ferries - book sleeping cabins in advance! The cabins on our ferry were fully booked and we spent a bloody uncomfortable night in the lounge on chairs not built for sleeping hehe. All of our ten days in Greece were part of a Topdeck tour (details of our specific tour are here). It made a nice change to have everything done and sorted for us, and an ever nicer change to be out of hostels and into hotels! Athens is an awesome place, except for maybe the persistent haze that hovers over it due to the surrounding hills that hold the city's pollution in place. If there's one thing that sticks out in my mind about our time in Greece it's the food, mmmmm! Souvlakis, gyros, Greek salads, ohhhh yeah! Athens is apparently a much improved city after the 2004 Olympic Games brought about a lot of public works projects, hotel renovations, and new shops and restaurants. And of course, with as much history as Rome, there is plenty to see!

The trip from Naples through to Bari involved a two-hour stopover in Caserta, so I went for a wander to find a supermarket and get some brunch. After two days in the chaos that is Naples, this place was a real breath of fresh air. The only traffic jams here were at the railway crossing when trains were coming, and there wasn't a single car horn to be heard, anywhere!

These two chilling out in Caserta reminded me of the two old men, Statler and Waldorf, from The Muppets hahaha!

We eventually made it the rest of the way to Bari, found our way to the port with the help of a couple of Aussies looking for it also, and departed in time for a couple of cold ones under our last Italian sunset.

The following day was windy and showery. We were wandering around outside on the rear deck of the ferry when I noticed a passenger run up to the outdoor bar and say something to the barman, who then jumped over the bar and ran towards the front of the ferry. Clearly something was up, so I ran after them with the camera hehe. Half way to the front of the ferry I happened to look up and this is what I saw. This huge waterspout was a few hundred metres ahead and coming right for us!

Just before it hit us I took this shot overlooking the front of the ferry and then ducked for cover!

We got drenched with sea spray though I still managed to take this shot of the spout right above us (good thing my camera is "weather proof").

We returned to the back of the ferry to watch it some more, but it disappeared soon after. Two more then developed and touched down - awesome show! :)
