Right in the middle of town is Market Square (known locally as Markt), a big open area surrounded by cafes, more impressive architecture, and overlooked by the 88-metre high Belfry Tower (known locally as Belfort). It was built in 1240, and rebuilt again in 1280 after a massive fire. The city archives were stored here during that period and were lost in the fire - bugger! The octagonal upper stage of the belfry was added between 1482 to 1486 and capped with a wooden spire which just seven years later was struck by lighting and reduced to ash hehe. So it's had a rather unfortunate history this building, with another fire messing it up it again in 1741.

For a few Euros you can climb the 366 steps to the top of the Belfry, passing the clock mechanism on the way. How exactly this big mess of cogs does what it does I don't know, but on the hour it all bursts into life and starts this big cylinder turning. Those metal knobs sticking out of the cylinder trip the levers in the photo on the right which are linked to 47 bells upstairs, causing a deafening cacophony of noise that can be heard from miles away! Interesting fact: those 47 bells weigh a total of 27.5 tonnes!

Panoramic views from the top of the Belfry - awesome!

The weather was pretty threatening on the first day, but nonetheless be did a 45-minute boat tour up the canals with this bunch of boring old farts.

They did however find it pretty amusing when I almost got taken out by a bridge while standing up taking photos (on purpose ;)

Weather aside, the little boat tour was pretty interesting and there's plenty of stuff around the place to see. A house from the 17th century...

A brewery from the 19th century...

A swan from the 21st century...

Museums from God knows when...

And so forth and so on. Very pretty! :)

The weather fined up in the evening and we went for a big walk around the place as the sun was setting. All of these are random shots were taken during the wander...

And there's the castle at the centre of the Labyrinth hahaha ;)

After getting some grub I went for another wander at night. Bloody hell this place is nice!

I think the only the people on the boat cracked a smile was when I took that photo of you with the bridge... hahaha
