Bruges (30 April - 3 May 2010)

Have you ever seen the Colin Farrell movie In Bruges? Well you should. As you might have guessed, In Bruges is set in none other than Bruges in far-northwest Belgium. I've been here before - a year before In Bruges was released in fact, and after the three years of travelling I've done since, Bruges is right up there with Interlaken, Switzerland as one my absolute favourite European destinations. Bruges is a small city and its historic city centre (a UNESCO World Heritage site) covers just over 400 hectares enclosed in an egg-shaped ring road approximately 2kms from east to west and 4km from north to south. It's fucking gorgeous, and it attracts a lot of tourists. For me though, there's a lot more that attracts me to Bruges than just Bruges. Anyway, Katie came with, it was a public holiday on Monday, so long weekend here we come!

Hooray for the Eurostar! Some 300kms between London and Brussels (capital of Belgium) via the Channel Tunnel in just 90 minutes. I spent it listening to toons while contemplating life. It was then another hour on a slow train to Bruges another 100kms away.

We arrived at 11pm, and this was the view the following morning. The forecast of crap weather all weekend wasn't wrong. Bugger!

Our room in the B&B was up in the attic, atop a perfectly safe staircase with a gradient of something nearing 100% hehe.

Anyway, shit weather or not, I came here with my own bike to go nuts, so that's what I did! I had a 100km route in mind, but first a quick blat around central Bruges (on uncomfortable cobble streets).

Because of the weather, none of these photos can possibly do this place any justice. When I was here three years ago the weather was slightly better and I was able to get some slightly better shots, so maybe check them out too but anyway here we have the Markt (Market Square) being towered over by the 12th-century belfry.

Bruges is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North, and its very cute maze of wee streets can confuse the tourists just as much :)

A few random shots, all of them ruined by the weather. Spot the dog in the basket hehe.
