Thursday, 21 June 2007 - Summer Solstice!

Today was the northern hemisphere's longest day of the year, and this far north in Edinburgh it sure is bloody long! After a really misty morning, this was the scene looking over the Firth of Forth at 9pm.
And this was the scene from my bedroom window at 10pm, and again at 11pm. It'll start getting light again in just 4.5 hours at 3:30am - awesome huh! The sun set at 10:03pm after rising at 4:26am - that's 17.5 hours of daylight compared to the miserable 6.5 hours we'll get in six months time on the shortest day of the year, when the sun sets at bloody 3:30pm after making an 'appearance' at 9am!

Thursday, 21 June 2007 - To Dublin for some (well, lots of) Guinness!

In Glasgow back in March, RyanAir were giving out 'free' flights (not including taxes etc.) for two to Dublin, Ireland in celebration of St. Patrick's Day week. Well if it's free it's meant to be as I always say, and I was there to snap a couple up hehe! So, Jen and I are flying out to Dublin first thing tomorrow morning for a long weekend of Guinness-fuelled fun!

Tuesday, 26 June 2007 - Please, no more Guinness!
I'm back, I've probably had my recommended intake of Guinness to see me out for the rest of year, and I'm totally buggered! Only a couple hundred photos to sort through so they should be up here before too long :)

Thursday, 28 June 2007 - I feel like a Guinness again!
The Dublin pics are up from the weekend; I suggest you enjoy them over a Guinness :) Have a listen to this too while you're at it (more info in the Dublin section)! My next trip at this stage is Spain for a week at the end of August for La Tomatina - the tomato throwing festival! I can't wait - I've been dying for a good food fight ever since leaving high school! ;) There was talk of a possible camping trip in Croatia some time during September, but that's still being figured out.

Friday, 29 June 2007 - Just another day in the UK

The front of my work building was cordoned off yet again this morning, for yet another overnight stabbing. Same old story: some guy left a club in the wee small hours, obviously rubbed somebody up the wrong way while he was in there, and was subsequently dealt with. And in other news, a potentially devastating car bomb was discovered in central London over night after the driver of the car somehow crashed it and fled the scene. Police found 60 litres of fuel on the back seat, gas cylinders, and nails. More info here. Early reports are that the bomb was to be triggered remotely via mobile phone, probably during the morning rush hour when it would've taken out hundreds of people. Yup, just another day in the UK. I really like it here.

Saturday, 30 June 2007 - Like I said, I really like it here

After the attempted terrorist attack in central London yesterday, a pair of Asians decided to deliberately drive their Jeep Cherokee right through the front door of departures at Glasgow Airport today. Full story here...

In other news, it's another shithouse day in Edinburgh. I haven't been for a good ride in a couple weeks, and I've now resorted to wearing my helmet inside to help me cope with the withdrawal symptoms hehe.

And Jen, in reply to your comment below somewhere, I also noticed the light on the horizon last night. These two photos were shot looking north just after 1am (the photo on the left was shot as is; the right was shot using my camera's 'Night scene' mode to emphasize it). We're obviously just far enough north here to be able to see the sky on the horizon over where it is light 24 hours a day at this time of year. I've never noticed this before but that'll be because it's always bloody overcast.

Monday, 2 July 2007 - Where's this God of yours?

As the rain continues to pour in what the Brits call 'summer', the bombs continue to fly. London x2 on Friday, Glasgow Airport on Saturday, Royal Alexandra Hospital (in Paisley, near Glasgow Airport) on Sunday, and Bathgate (40kms from Edinburgh) today. More info on the timeline of events over the last few days here. Mum, try not to be worried :)

I went out to Glasgow Airport after work today to survey the scene after Saturday's failed attempt by, yup you guessed it - Muslims, to blow the place up. There were some pretty good photos in the paper this morning of the whole incident including a good one of the Jeep driver running around on fire and screaming "Allah Allah!" after he'd just set himself alight. There was also another good one of him being pinned to the floor by a cop after he was put out by a fire extinguisher. He's now in a critical condition in hospital, and my usual feeling on situations such as these is fuck 'em - pull the plug and let 'em go, but in this case that's exactly what he wanted so I've changed my mind - let him suffer. A number of other people were arrested today over this, all of them Muslim, of which three were doctors at local hospitals in the area - unreal (I hasten to add I'm not taking a swipe at the Muslim community here - not that I think any of them read my website hehe - just stating the facts). Links between Glasgow Airport and the attempted car bombings in London on Friday are still being investigated. What the hell do these people hope to achieve by all this?!

Some chick was quoted in the paper as saying "...thank the Lord the bombs didn't explode, thank the Lord for this and thank the Lord for that..." Where was this Lord of yours two years ago on July 7, 2005 when several bombs were successfully exploded in a coordinated attack throughout the London public transport system, killing 52 and injuring 700? Where was your God on September 11, 2001 when four commercial jetliners were hijacked by another tribe of Muslims and slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and (unintentionally) the middle of nowhere, killing close to 3,000 people? I know one reader of this site in particular is a very religious person, and apologies for the religious offence but if you could leave a comment on this subject and perhaps educate me (and probably a few others) on the matter I'd be greatful because I just don't understand.

Here's what's left of the Glasgow Airport's front door hehe. A huge area of the ceiling is charred, and the place absolutely stinks of burnt stuff (and the air conditioning just spreads it through the terminal).

This was on my train home tonight. Apparently we now have to resort to this subject being advertised on public transport. Yup, the world we live in. Where's this God of yours?

Tuesday, 3 July 2007 - And still they come (just like the rain)

The rain continues to piss down, the Wimbledon Tennis Open continues to get held up, and new revelations surrounding the recent bombing attempts continue too. The latest development is that Brisbane has now become a part of all this with a Gold Coast-based Indian doctor (yup, another doctor) being detained at Brisbane Airport as he was attempting to fly on a one-way ticket back to India. I'm not sure what his connection is to all of this, but he's just one of two being held in Australia which brings the total number in custody to nine with five of them being doctors. This just keeps getting weirder! It has also been revealed that Friday's two car bombs in London were to be triggered via mobile phone, and were in fact 'rung' by the terrorists several times but failed to detonate for "technical reasons" - scary! Also today there were more controlled explosions at Royal Alexandra Hospital, and a local Mosque. The action continues.

Wednesday, 4 July 2007 - Welcome to Glasgow, Mohammed

Tip to anybody planning a terrorist attack on Glasgow: don't.

Over the last few days, stories have been emerging of the immediate reaction of the locals who witnessed Sunday's attack on Glasgow Airport. This Word document sums it up pretty nicely. There's a mention in there of a John Smeaton. Smeaton is a mere-baggage-handler-turned-hero-overnight after he and several others attacked the two occupants of the Jeep! Never mind the fact that the Jeep could've exploded at any minute (as was supposed to happen), the dumbarse Wegies (who don't need much of an excuse to have a good scrap anyway) laid into these guys good and proper hahaha classic! The driver, who set himself alight and is still in critical condition in hospital, is rumoured to be in that critical condition mostly because of the pummeling he got from Smeaton and friends before police stepped in. Only in bloody Glasgow would someone try to bring down a terrorist who is on fire while threatening to throw a petrol bomb at you. I'm actually proud of the place! Smeaton has been all over the news and everything this week, and has developed a bit of a Chuck Norris reputation! So yes, good old Glas-vegas, not the best place to carry out terrorist attacks as odds are you'll only end up getting attacked yourself hehe.

Saturday, 7 July 2007 - Edinburgh Castle (finally!)

Davydd (who leaves inappropriate comments throughout this website) and Gav (who doesn't) were up here for the weekend (mates from Brisbane now living in London), so after living here for 10 months I finally did the touristy thing and went through Edinburgh Castle :)

Oh look out - Muslim-looking folk, scoping out the entrance and car park ;)

Although it's been around since about the 9th century BC, few of the castle's current structures are much older that about the 16th century, including the flash toilets and telephone facilities ;)

Despite the castle having never been successfully invaded, the armies that tried and failed could at least purchase a souvenir and some chocolates from the gift shop to send home.

The castle stands about 120 metres high and offers a pretty good view of invading English scum below.

Davydd, giving his 'respects' to the city.

This is the One O'Clock Gun, fired every day except Sunday at precisely 1300 hours. Back in the day, this was to enable ships to check the accuracy of their digital clocks on their microwave ovens as the gun could easily be heard from as far away as the Firth. Nowadays it's just a cool tourist attraction. One day in 1916 the One O'Clock Gun was fired in vain at a German plane during an air raid, which was the gun's only known use in war.

The castle has a number of well fortified gates that armies would have had to break through (or these days drive through in their Jeeps). This one on the right is only two years old because people (women) keep hitting the original gate with their delivery vans as they drove through and eventually fucked it!

I reckon a pair of these bad boys would look good on my wall! "Yeah come in love, this is my room. That's my bike, that's my stereo, those are my swords - the one on the left belonged to William Wallace. There's the bed..."

I mentioned above that most of the current structures only date back to around the 16th century, but with one notable exception. The little building on the far right is St. Margret's Chapel, the oldest building in the castle dating back to the start of the 12th century.

Gav found himself a nice crown in the gift shop, and Dav made a penis of himself in the castle's underground prisons. Disgraceful.

Speaking of the prison, there's an original prison door in the museum complete with 200-year-old graffiti from prisoners of the time - unreal!

Although the castle is a tourist attraction, it still has a function as a military headquarters of the British Army, and when the castle closes to tourists for the day the military take over. Gav was quite taken with this little dude who looked all of about 16. Quote of the day: "Watch the trigger eh, I'm Australian, I'm not one of the bad guys." Disgraceful.

After our history lesson we hit the pubs. This is looking down the Royal Mile. There are some bloody great little pubs along here!

Boys on a stag night hehe.

We headed to the Grassmarket (another good spot for pubs, bars and clubs), and eventually caught one of these cycle-taxis back into town to meet a few others and get some dinner. I felt so sorry for this guy! I'm 70-something kilograms, Dav's as tall as a tree so he'd be a bit more, and these poor guys have to lug us up hills and everything hahaha bugger that! In my semi-drunken state I was really keen to swap seats with this guy and give it a go, but he wisely declined the offer hehe. I ran the camera home for fear of damaging it during the antics of the night, and it's probably a good thing I did and couldn't get anymore shots because it was a typical boys night out. Disgraceful.

Sunday, 8 July 2007 - My God, could it be... No... Yes yes, I see the sun!

Hell yeah! I've been gagging for the sun every weekend since I bought the bike back in May, and every bloody weekend it's been the same: rain, wind and cold! So when I woke up at noon and saw it through my squinting hung over eyes, I quickly stuffed my face with the usual morning-after-the-night-before, artery-blocking breakfast and I was straight out there - not even a hang over could hold me back! ;) A few weeks ago I put up some shots of the Water of Leith pathway that follows the river for about 15 miles (24kms). I only did some of it back then, and today I did the rest. It's a bloody great track too - asphalt here, gravel there, boardwalks and mud thrown in too, and some bloody awesome scenery!

Look at this - isn't that pretty!

You don't get this in bloody Glasgow!

There are a few random things along the way to keep a cyclist amused like old abandoned buildings, stone hut things, bridges, pedestrians to scare with your air horn - it's great!

The path has several exits and other little paths to the outer suburbs. It was pretty cool to actually see some of them for first time. After I'd been living in Brisbane this long I'd already seen most of it!

Eventually the path ends up out in Balerno, quite a nice little area some eight miles (13 kms) out of central Edinburgh. By the time I got home after doing my usual 500 detours to see what else is around I'd done exactly 50kms - the first time in far too long I've done that sort of distance!

Lord, give me strength!!

And yeah look at that piddly little waste of time - a pot, we'll be downing those in one shot hehehe.
- Aaron

Me and Gav couldn't stop pissing ourselves when we saw the 'Jesus Army' bus on the freeway back to London yesterday... lol

We're eventually going to go home and laugh at the puny drink sizes...

Awesome weekend! Saturday night was offically a disgrace, my god the Scots drink hard don't they! Will be up there again soonish, will catch a train up next time.
- Davydd

aw was looking forward to the disgraceful shots ;)
Yay for the sunshine over the weekend tho - the castle looked a lot emptier than when I was there...
- Jen

I,too, would love to chase F1 twisters in America. See you tonight in Auld Reekie.
- Davydd

I'd rather be there for the tornadoes too, but not because I'm scared of terrorists and their failed attempts to blow stuff up. I love wild weather, with a passion; storm chasing in America would be have to be one of my all-time favourite things I want to do!!
- Aaron

fair enough - maybe they're from that part of the country anyway ;)
You were saying in Dublin that Glasgow needs a good old culling...
Still not a nice thing to have happen nearby - would rather be in NZ with the tornadoes
- Jen

Be that as it may Jen, it's just typical of the Glasgow mentality and reputation; the would-be bombers really couldn't have chosen a worse place to do it hahahaha!! Some parts of Glasgow I've seen look like they've been hit by an atomic bomb anyway so trying to blow it up more is as pointless as giving a bald man a comb...
- Aaron

I could see a lot of rednecks back home doing the same for a VB!
- Davydd

it aint just people from Glasgow that would do that - my work mates would do that too (so it's Scottish people in general), I couldn't understand a word they said when they forwarded me that word doc coz they got so excited they spoke really quick hahahaha
- Jen

I must say a lot of them were of Iraqi descent - I have no sympathy for the terrorists - but if you'd been bombed, shot at and blown up by the US and Britain and your own countrymen wouldn't you be absolutely livid too? Still no excuse for attacking civilians. Attack military targets if they have to blow up something?
- Davydd

I wasn't offended by ur big rant and rave - although I do get offended when I'm compared to a monkey ;)
I blame our lovely new Scottish PM - oh and the NHS for employing the sick bastards that apparently did it!!!!
- Jen

Yeah cos that'll fix everything....
- Mo

Better wear that helmet out all the time cos obviously us in London aren't the only targets. I hope MI5 is shoving burning bamboo underneath the terrorists fucking nails right now.
- Davydd

hahaha do you sleep with your helmet on too? The mornings are seriously the only decent time of the day to get out - so wake up earlier :P
- Jen

yup always lots stabbings, bomb threats, it's cos we're such lovely folk ;)On the amazing side it was still light after midnight (photo is blurry proof taken @ 00:10 30th June!!!)

hahaha just heard that Princess St is like a river from the rain and there was hail here just before - love this summer weather ;)
- Jen

ok yes... it should be a little warmer just now but at least its not any colder!!x
- sam

Depends on how you look at it. I came here by choice, and so by that rationale I can't complain. However, right from day one I've been promised a warm(ish) sunny summer and so far this place hasn't delivered the goods...
- Aaron

Given the fact he spent the last 2 years in Brisbane where their winters are warmer than this crap weather he's allowed to complain - I'm not impressed with the lack of summer either!!!
- Jen

its only cold cos you're not used to it!!! i admit it has been warmer and drier but i've also seen it a hell of a lot worse!!!
- sam

luuucky im fricken freezin ma balls off over here!!! too cold. mmmmm electric blankets! who ever invented those was/is a genius and id like to shake their hand and congratulate them on a lifesaver to most.
